The K. Balachander & V. S. Raghavan partnership

Between 1969 and 1972, they barely worked apart — 6 films in 3 years. From Iru Kodugal (1969) to Kanna Nalama (1972). Nootrukku Nooru (1971, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.

The ran closed with Kanna Nalama in 1972. Iru Kodugal is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 83% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Iru Kodugal; the 1970s to Punnagai. K. Balachander directed every film; V. S. Raghavan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Balachander cast Raghavan in Ethiroli (1970) after seeing him play a small role in a stage play. Raghavan was so nervous on the first day of shoot that Balachander had to sit beside the camera and whisper the lines to him for the first two takes.
  • In Kaviya Thalaivi (1970), Balachander deliberately gave Raghavan long, uninterrupted monologues — something no other director had done before. Raghavan later said Balachander was the only director who trusted him to hold the screen alone for minutes at a stretch.
  • The success of Punnagai (1971) directly led to Balachander casting Raghavan in his next big hit, Nootrukku Nooru (1971). That film made Raghavan a household name for villain roles across Tamil cinema for the next two decades.
  • After Punnagai wrapped, Balachander and Raghavan never worked together again. No fallout — Balachander simply moved to bigger budgets and younger actors. Raghavan told a magazine in 1985: 'He outgrew me. I don't blame him.'
  • Raghavan once said in an interview: 'Balachander sir would make me rehearse a scene 15 times before the camera rolled. Then he'd say, 'Now forget everything and just react to the other actor.' That's how I learned to act.'
