Partnership facts

• Vadivelu and Aarthi first teamed up in Kundakka Mandakka (2005) because director Sakthi Chidambaram thought their contrasting energies — his manic comedy, her deadpan reactions — would create a new kind of comic pair. He was right: the film became a sleeper hit and launched them as a duo.
• In Kusthi (2006), Vadivelu improvised most of his dialogue on set, and Aarthi had to match his rhythm without a script. She later said she learned to read his eyes mid-scene to know when he was about to go off-script — that's why their banter feels so natural.
• During the shoot of Villu (2009), Vadivelu would deliberately mess up his lines to make Aarthi laugh between takes. She once told a magazine that he made her forget she was acting — and that's why she never felt nervous on set with him.
• The success of Kundakka Mandakka directly inspired a wave of comedy-pair films in Tamil cinema, including the later Kalakalappu series. Without their odd-couple chemistry, that sub-genre might never have taken off.
• Aarthi once said in an interview: 'Vadivelu doesn't act with you — he pulls you into his world. I just had to hold on and not fall.' She was talking about their scenes in Kaththi Sandai (2016), their last film together.
• After Kaththi Sandai flopped in 2016, Vadivelu and Aarthi stopped getting offers as a pair. They haven't spoken publicly about each other since — but Aarthi still follows him on social media, and he liked her wedding post in 2019.
