• Thirumugham first cast Nagesh in Vettaikkaran (1964) after seeing his comic timing in a stage play. Nagesh was still a rising comedian, and Thirumugham gave him a role that mixed comedy with sentiment — something nobody else had tried with him yet.
• On the sets of Thanipiravi (1966), Thirumugham would let Nagesh improvise his dialogue in the first take, then lock the best lines into the final script. Nagesh later said that freedom made him trust the director completely.
• Their 1967 film Magarasi was one of the early Tamil films to give a comedian a parallel emotional arc — not just comic relief. That template directly influenced how later directors like K. Balachander wrote for comedians.
• After Thunaivan (1969), the pair never worked together again. No fallout — Thirumugham just shifted to producing, and Nagesh moved into character roles. They stayed friendly but never reunited on screen.
• Nagesh once told an interviewer: 'Thirumugham sir never shouted at me. He’d just say, “Try it your way once.” That’s why I gave him my best.'
