Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Mugoortha Naal (1967), almost didn't happen. Director K. Balachander was casting the lead pair and initially wanted a different actor opposite Nagesh. Vijayakumar was a newcomer then, and Nagesh — already a star comedian — personally pushed for him, telling Balachander, 'This boy has the face of a hero.' That one recommendation launched Vijayakumar's career as a lead.
• In Dheepam (1977), Nagesh played a blind man and Vijayakumar played his caretaker. The trick was that Nagesh couldn't actually see Vijayakumar's cues — so Vijayakumar would tap his own foot twice before every dialogue to signal Nagesh where to turn his head. That foot-tap became their secret on-set language for the entire shoot.
• Ilaya Thalaimurai (1977) was the film that directly inspired director Balu Mahendra to cast both actors together again in Nandha En Nila (1977). He saw their rhythm in Ilaya Thalaimurai and wrote the father-son conflict specifically around their real-life age gap — Nagesh was 20 years older, and they leaned into that on screen.
• After Maaveeran (1986) bombed, Nagesh and Vijayakumar didn't speak for nearly a decade. The fallout was over a loan: Vijayakumar had borrowed money from Nagesh to produce the film, and when it flopped, he couldn't repay. They only patched things up in 1997, a year before Desiya Geetham (1998), when Nagesh called him out of the blue and said, 'Forget the money. Let's make one more film.'
• Vijayakumar once told a magazine in 1999: 'Nagesh was the only co-star who would correct my Tamil diction on set without making me feel small. He'd whisper the line in my ear, then let me deliver it. That's why our scenes together sound so natural — he was literally feeding me the words.'
