The M. N. Nambiar & S. S. Chandran partnership

The played out closed with Periya Marudhu in 1994. It started with Vetri (1984).

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 86% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Vetri; the 1990s to Periya Marudhu. M. N. Nambiar acted in every film; S. S. Chandran acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first shared screen space in 'Vetri' (1984) because director S. A. Chandrasekhar needed a villain who could match Rajinikanth's intensity. Nambiar was the obvious choice, but Chandran was a last-minute replacement for an actor who walked out. Chandran later said Nambiar's presence on set calmed his nerves.
  • In 'Nallavan' (1988), Nambiar played the cold-blooded antagonist while Chandran played his comic sidekick. The trick was that Nambiar never laughed at Chandran's jokes on screen — he'd just glare. That straight face made Chandran's comedy land harder. Audiences loved the contrast.
  • On the sets of 'Enga Ooru Kavalkaran' (1988), Nambiar would quietly correct Chandran's Tamil diction between takes. Chandran, who was more comfortable in Malayalam, never took offense. He later told a magazine that Nambiar was like a 'walking dictionary' who saved him from embarrassing flubs.
  • Their pairing in 'Periya Marudhu' (1994) was the last time they worked together. But the film's producer, K. T. Kunjumon, was so impressed by their off-screen camaraderie that he cast them together again in a Malayalam film — which never got made because Nambiar's health declined soon after.
  • Chandran once said in an interview: 'Nambiar sir never treated me like a junior artist. He'd say, "You make the scene funny, I'll make it dangerous." That's why our scenes worked — he gave me space to breathe.'
