The Vijayakumar & P. Madhavan partnership

From Mugoortha Naal (1967) to En Kelvikku Enna Bathil (1978). The ran closed with En Kelvikku Enna Bathil in 1978. Pattum Bharathamum is the one most viewers reach for.

It started with Mugoortha Naal (1967).

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 83% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Mugoortha Naal; the 1970s to Pattum Bharathamum. Vijayakumar acted in every film; P. Madhavan directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Mugoortha Naal (1967), almost didn't happen. The director wanted a bigger star for the male lead, but Madhavan insisted on Vijayakumar after seeing him in a stage play. He told the producer: 'If he's not in it, I'm out.'
  • On the set of Ponnukku Thanga Manasu (1973), Vijayakumar would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Madhavan laugh. Madhavan would then reset the scene by improvising a counter-joke. The director kept the camera rolling through both takes — and used the second one in the final cut.
  • Shankar Salim Simon (1978) was the first Tamil film to feature a live rock band performance on screen. The band members were handpicked by Madhavan, and Vijayakumar convinced the producer to let them play the entire song in one continuous shot — a technique that later inspired the 'single-take song' trend in 80s Tamil cinema.
  • After every film wrap, the two would exchange one personal item as a keepsake — a pen, a handkerchief, a watch. Vijayakumar once gave Madhavan his lucky ring after Pattum Bharathamum (1975). Madhavan wore it in every film he made for the next three years.
  • Madhavan said in a 1980 interview: 'Vijayakumar is the only co-star who made me forget my lines. Not because he was bad — because he was so good, I'd just stand there watching him.'
  • In En Kelvikku Enna Bathil (1978), the climax scene required both actors to cry on cue. Vijayakumar couldn't get into the emotion. Madhavan quietly whispered a personal story from Vijayakumar's own life into his ear just before 'action' — and Vijayakumar broke down instantly. The take was used in the final film.
