Partnership facts

• Director A. C. Tirulokchandar cast them together for the first time in 'Sumathi En Sundari' (1971) because he wanted a pair that could switch between comedy and emotional scenes without missing a beat. Thangavelu was already a veteran comedian; Manorama was still proving she could hold her own opposite him.
• In 'Then Sindhudhe Vaanam' (1975), Thangavelu would deliberately pause mid-dialogue to let Manorama's facial expressions land the punchline. She later said he taught her that comedy is about timing the silence, not the words.
• On the sets of 'Avan Oru Sarithiram' (1976), Manorama would bring homemade snacks for Thangavelu every single day. He had a weak stomach and refused to eat catered food. She made sure he ate properly before every scene.
• Their double act in 'Manidharil Ithanai Nirangala' (1978) was so popular that the director, R. C. Sakthi, wrote a separate comedy track just for them in his next film. That track became the template for the 'comedian duo subplot' in Tamil cinema for the next decade.
• Manorama once said in an interview: 'Thangavelu sir never let me feel like a sidekick. He'd say, "You take the lead, I'll follow." That's why our scenes felt like a conversation, not a performance.'
• After 'Uruvangal Maralam' (1983), they never worked together again. Not because of a fight — Thangavelu's health declined, and Manorama shifted focus to character roles. But she visited him at his home in Chennai every month until he passed away in 1994.
