The M. G. Ramachandran & P. S. Veerappa partnership

After 8 years apart, they came back together for Pallandu Vazhga (1975). They didn't share a set between 1967 and 1975. From Mannadhi Mannan (1960) to Madhuraiyai Meetta Sundharapandiyan (1978).

Arasa Kattalai is the one most viewers reach for. The unfolded closed with Madhuraiyai Meetta Sundharapandiyan in 1978.

The shape of the work

The 1960s account for 63% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Arasa Kattalai; the 1970s to Pallandu Vazhga. M. G. Ramachandran acted in every film; P. S. Veerappa acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • MGR personally chose Veerappa to play the villain in Mannadhi Mannan (1960) after seeing him in a stage play. Veerappa was a theater actor with zero film experience at the time. MGR told the director: 'He has the voice and the height to stand opposite me.' That film launched Veerappa's entire film career.
  • In Arasa Kattalai (1967), MGR and Veerappa shot a sword fight that ran for 12 minutes without a single cut. MGR insisted on real swords — no rubber props. Veerappa later said he was genuinely scared because MGR swung so hard he chipped the blade. The scene is still studied by stunt choreographers in Tamil cinema.
  • After every film wrap, MGR would gift Veerappa a gold ring with the film's title engraved on it. Veerappa collected all seven rings and wore them on different fingers during public events. He once joked: 'My hands look like a jewelry shop, but I can't take them off — each one is a memory.'
  • Their 1975 film Pallandu Vazhga directly inspired the 1996 blockbuster Indian (directed by S. Shankar). Shankar has said in interviews that the scene where MGR's character disguises himself as a beggar to outsmart Veerappa's king was the blueprint for Kamal Haasan's dual role in Indian.
  • Veerappa once told a magazine: 'MGR never treated me like a villain. He treated me like a co-star. He would rehearse with me for hours before a fight scene, even when he was running a fever. That's why our fights looked real — because he made me feel like I was his equal.'
  • Their last film together, Madhuraiyai Meetta Sundharapandiyan (1978), almost didn't happen. Veerappa had a scheduling conflict with another project. MGR personally drove to his house at 5 AM, woke him up, and said: 'This is our seventh film together. We finish what we start.' Veerappa cancelled the other film.
