The Brahmanandam & Sreenu Vaitla partnership
From Anandam (2001) to Bruce Lee (2015). For 14 years, a Brahmanandam–Sreenu film arrived almost every year. Dhee is the one most viewers reach for.
It started with Anandam (2001).
The shape of the work
The 2000s belonged to Dhee; the 2010s to Dookudu. Sreenu Vaitla screenplay in some, director in others. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Sreenu Vaitla didn't write the role of 'Babloo' in Venky (2004) for Brahmanandam. He wrote it for a younger actor. Brahmanandam heard about it, walked into Vaitla's office, and said 'Nenu chestha' (I'll do it). Vaitla rewrote the part on the spot to fit him.
- On the sets of Dookudu (2011), Brahmanandam would deliberately flub his lines in the first take. He did this to make Sreenu Vaitla laugh and loosen up the crew. Vaitla caught on after three days and started writing extra comedy scenes just to see what Brahmanandam would improv next.
- The 'Pandu' character Brahmanandam played in Ready (2008) became so popular that Sreenu Vaitla reused the same name and mannerisms for a different character in Baadshah (2013). Fans still call that specific comic style 'Pandu comedy' in Telugu households.
- Brahmanandam never called Sreenu Vaitla by his name. For all five films, he addressed him as 'Director gaaru' even during lunch breaks. Vaitla once asked why, and Brahmanandam said, 'If I call you by name, I'll start treating you like a friend and stop listening to your directions.'
- Sreenu Vaitla said in a 2014 interview: 'Brahmanandam is the only actor who can make me laugh while I'm watching the monitor. I have to hide my face behind the camera because if he sees me laughing, he'll do something even crazier in the next take.'
