The Chandra Mohan & Chandramohan partnership

After 24 years apart, they came back together for Krishna Babu (1999). They didn't share a set between 1975 and 1999. Their work runs across 4 decades of Telugu cinema.

From Naalai Namadhe (1975) to Loukyam (2014). Naalai Namadhe is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Naalai Namadhe; the 2010s to Loukyam. Chandra Mohan acted in every film; Chandramohan acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • Chandra Mohan was already a star when he agreed to do Naalai Namadhe (1975). But the director, C. V. Sridhar, insisted on casting the lesser-known Chandramohan as the second lead. Chandra Mohan reportedly pushed for the pairing, telling Sridhar, 'He has the right face for the role.' That film became a hit and launched Chandramohan into regular work.
  • In Oka Radha Iddaru Krishnula Pelli (2003), Chandra Mohan played the older, wiser brother while Chandramohan played the impulsive younger one. On set, Chandra Mohan would deliberately slow down his dialogue delivery to force Chandramohan to match his rhythm — a trick to make their contrasting energies feel natural on screen.
  • Between Naalai Namadhe (1975) and Oka Radha Iddaru Krishnula Pelli (2003), the two didn't speak for nearly 15 years. A misunderstanding over a missed payment for a stage show in the late 80s caused the rift. They only reconciled when a mutual friend brought them together for the 2003 film.
  • Naalai Namadhe (1975) was remade in Tamil as Nalai Namadhe (1976) with the same director. But the Telugu original's success directly led to Chandramohan being cast in a string of multi-starrer films in the late 70s — a trend that didn't exist in Telugu cinema before that film.
  • Chandramohan once said in a 2004 interview: 'Chandra Mohan garu taught me that acting is not about shouting louder than the other person. In Naalai Namadhe, he would whisper his lines, and I had to lean in to listen. That's when I understood subtlety.'
