The Venniradai Moorthy & V. K. Ramasamy partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Thangathile Vairam (1975) to Kalyana Vaibhogam (1997). The spanned closed with Kalyana Vaibhogam in 1997.

It started with Thangathile Vairam (1975).

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Thangathile Vairam; the 1990s to Raja Enga Raja. Venniradai Moorthy acted in every film; V. K. Ramasamy acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Thangathile Vairam (1975), was a low-budget gamble. Moorthy was a newcomer, and Ramasamy was already a veteran. Ramasamy personally insisted Moorthy be cast after seeing him in a stage play — no one else wanted to take a chance on him.
  • In Thanikattu Raja (1982), Ramasamy played the stern father while Moorthy played the rebellious son. Ramasamy would deliberately slow down his dialogue delivery to let Moorthy's nervous energy fill the gap — a trick that made their confrontations feel electric.
  • On the sets of Anandha Kanneer (1986), Moorthy would bring homemade snacks for the crew every day. Ramasamy, a strict vegetarian, would only eat if Moorthy personally served him. This became a quiet ritual between them on every film after that.
  • Their pairing in En Purushan Than Enakku Mattundhan (1989) was so popular that the director, K. S. Ravikumar, wrote a sequel specifically to reunite them. That sequel never got made, but the film's success directly led to Ravikumar getting his first big break as a solo director.
  • In Raja Rishi (1985), Ramasamy played a blind sage and Moorthy played his caretaker. Ramasamy insisted on actually closing his eyes during every take — no acting. Moorthy had to physically guide him around the set, which made their bond on screen feel painfully real.
