• Jayalalitha was already a huge star when she agreed to do 'Nam Naadu' (1969). Thengai Srinivasan was a stage comedian making his early film moves. She personally asked the director to cast him as her on-screen brother — she had seen his stage act and thought his comic timing would balance her intense scenes.
• In 'Sumathi En Sundari' (1971), Thengai Srinivasan improvised an entire scene where he mimics Jayalalitha's signature dialogue delivery from her earlier hit 'Adimai Penn'. She laughed so hard during the take that the director kept the flub in the final cut — you can see her breaking character for a split second.
• During the shoot of 'Annai Velankanni' (1971), Jayalalitha and Thengai Srinivasan would share a cup of filter coffee between takes. He later said in an interview that she never treated him like a junior artist — she'd discuss politics and literature with him, which was rare for a leading lady to do with a comedian back then.
• Thengai Srinivasan once said: 'Jayalalitha had this way of making you feel like you were the only person in the room. When we acted together, she'd adjust her volume so my comedy could breathe. She didn't have to do that — she was the star.'
• Their pairing in 'Nam Naadu' (1969) was so well-received that the director of 'Sumathi En Sundari' (1971) specifically wrote a brother-sister track for them — a rare thing in Tamil cinema where comedians usually got solo comic relief roles.
