The 1970s account for 85% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Major Chandrakanth; the 1970s to En Annan. Jayalalitha acted in every film; R. Muthuraman acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Jayalalitha was already a huge star when she agreed to do Naan (1967). But she insisted on a newcomer as her hero — she personally picked R. Muthuraman after seeing him in a small role. That film became their first hit together.
• On the sets of Engirundho Vandhaal (1970), Muthuraman would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Jayalalitha laugh. She'd then improvise a sharper comeback, and the director kept those takes. That's why their banter feels so natural.
• During the shoot of Oru Thaai Makkal (1971), Jayalalitha's mother fell seriously ill. Muthuraman quietly rescheduled all his other commitments to be available whenever she needed to reshoot a scene — without ever telling the press.
• Their 1973 film Suryakanthi was the first Tamil movie to have a female protagonist who openly rejects the hero's marriage proposal. That plot point directly inspired K. Balachander's later feminist classic Aval Oru Thodarkathai.
• Muthuraman once said in a 1980 interview: 'With Jayalalitha, I didn't need to act. I just had to react. She gave me the rhythm.'
• After their last film together in 1976, they never spoke again. Not a single phone call. No one knows why — both took the reason to their graves.
