• They first shared screen space in Jagir (1984), but the real spark came when director J.P. Dutta cast them together in Ghulami (1985). Dutta wanted two actors who could play bitter rivals with real heat — and Mithun and Dharmendra delivered so intensely that the film became a template for 80s action-dramas.
• In Ilaaka (1989), Dharmendra played the stoic, law-abiding cop while Mithun was the hot-headed rebel. The trick? Dharmendra deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery to let Mithun's manic energy fill the gaps — a rhythm they perfected over six films together.
• Their pairing in Trinetra (1991) directly inspired the double-hero action formula that later producers like Boney Kapoor used for films like Judaai (1997) — where two stars with contrasting styles were pitted against each other in a single frame.
• On the sets of Watan Ke Rakhwale (1987), Dharmendra would cook his famous butter chicken for the entire crew every Sunday. Mithun once said in an interview that he learned more about patience from watching Dharmendra cook than from any acting workshop.
• Mithun Chakraborty once told a film magazine: 'Dharamji never gave me advice. He just looked at me before a scene and said, 'Chal, maar daal.' That was enough.'
• In Loha (1997), their last major hit together, the action scenes were choreographed so that Dharmendra would take the first punch and Mithun would deliver the final blow. It was a conscious choice by the director to show passing of the torch — even though both were still top stars.
