• Their first film together, Annaiyum Pithavum (1969), was a remake of a Malayalam hit. Nagesh was already a star comedian, but Lakshmi was a newcomer. Director K. Balachander bet on this odd pair — a seasoned comic and a fresh face — to carry a family drama. It worked, and they never looked back.
• In Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal (1976), Nagesh played a man with a mental disability. Lakshmi played his wife. The film’s most powerful scene has no dialogue — just Nagesh’s trembling hands and Lakshmi’s silent tears. She later said she fed off his physicality to keep her performance grounded.
• Their 1973 film Thalai Prasavam was one of the first Tamil movies to openly discuss postpartum depression. It sparked conversations in a conservative era. Years later, director Vetrimaaran cited it as an influence for his own female-centric dramas.
• On the sets of Agathiyar (1972), Nagesh would crack jokes between takes to keep Lakshmi laughing. She later revealed that he was the only co-star who never made her feel like a junior artiste — he’d rehearse scenes with her even when the director wasn’t around.
• Lakshmi once said in an interview: 'Nagesh didn't just act with me — he taught me how to react. Every pause, every blink, he gave me space to breathe.' She said this while recalling their work on Oru Nadigai Nadagam Paarkiral (1978).
