Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Puriyaadha Pudhir (1990), was a low-budget thriller that almost didn't happen. Ravikumar was an assistant director then; Sarath was a newcomer. They bonded over a shared love for old noir films during late-night script sessions.
• Ravikumar wrote Sarath's dialogue in a specific rhythm — short, punchy lines with a pause before the punch. Sarath would then add a slight head tilt or a delayed smile. That timing became their signature in films like Cheran Pandiyan (1991) and Nattamai (1994).
• Their 1998 film Natpukkaga launched the career of comedian Vadivelu as a lead comic actor. Ravikumar gave him a full-length comedy track opposite Sarath, and the film's success made Vadivelu a household name in Tamil cinema.
• On the sets of Band Master (1993), Sarath and Ravikumar had a falling out over a scene's staging. They didn't speak for three days. Ravikumar finally broke the silence by sending Sarath a note: 'If we fight, the film fights. Let's finish this first.' They patched up and never let a disagreement last more than a day after that.
• Ravikumar once said in a 2001 interview: 'Sarath is the only actor who can make my worst-written scene look good. I write for his face, not for the paper.'
• Their 2001 film Samudhiram was the first Tamil film to feature a full-length flashback narrated by a child character. That storytelling trick was later copied by at least three other directors in the next five years.
