The Vijayakumar & Charle partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Puthiya Vaanam (1988) to Thirumagan (2007). Sangamam is the one most viewers reach for.

It started with Puthiya Vaanam (1988).

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 64% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Puthiya Vaanam; the 2000s to Thirumagan. Vijayakumar acted in every film; Charle acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Charle was a stage actor with zero film experience when director R. Sundarrajan cast him opposite Vijayakumar in Mudhal Kural (1992). Vijayakumar, already a veteran, personally vouched for Charle after seeing him in a play — and even rehearsed scenes with him at home before shooting began.
  • In Kilipetchu Ketkava (1993), Vijayakumar deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery to match Charle's naturalistic, hesitant style. Charle later said that Vijayakumar's patience on set taught him how to hold a pause for emotional impact — a technique Charle carried into his later comedy roles.
  • During the shoot of Oru Oorla Oru Rajakumari (1995), Vijayakumar noticed Charle was struggling financially and quietly paid for his daughter's school fees for an entire year. Charle only found out when the school called to thank him — Vijayakumar had used a fake name on the payment receipt.
  • The success of their father-son dynamic in Thaayin Manikodi (1998) directly inspired director K. S. Ravikumar to cast them again in a similar emotional role in a later project — though that film never materialized. But the template they set — a stern father and a soft-spoken son — was copied by at least three TV serials in the early 2000s.
  • Charle once told a magazine: 'Vijayakumar sir didn't just act with me — he acted for me. In every scene, he made sure I looked good first. That's why I never felt like a newcomer when I was with him.'
