The Jackie Shroff & Subhash Ghai partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Hindi cinema. From Hero (1983) to Yaadein (2001). The ran closed with Yaadein in 2001.

It started with Hero (1983).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Hero; the 2000s to Yaadein. Jackie Shroff acted in every film; Subhash Ghai directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Subhash Ghai first noticed Jackie Shroff in a small role in 'Swami Dada' (1982). Ghai was casting for 'Hero' (1983) and needed a raw, street-smart face. He took a chance on Jackie, who had zero training. That film made both of them stars overnight.
  • On the set of 'Ram Lakhan' (1989), Ghai realized Jackie was terrible at remembering long dialogues. So Ghai rewrote Jackie's lines on the spot — shorter, punchier, more instinctive. Jackie delivered them with that signature stammer and swagger. That became his trademark style.
  • Because of 'Khalnayak' (1993), Ghai launched a whole new anti-hero trend in Bollywood. Jackie's character Ballu was a violent criminal with a soft heart. That film directly inspired later gangster films like 'Satya' (1998) and 'Vaastav' (1999). Jackie's Ballu became the template.
  • After 'Yaadein' (2001) flopped hard, Ghai and Jackie didn't speak for years. Jackie felt Ghai had lost his touch. Ghai felt Jackie had become too casual. They only patched up in 2018 at a mutual friend's party. Jackie later said, 'He's still my bhai. We just needed a break.'
  • Subhash Ghai once said about Jackie: 'He is the only actor who can make a villain look like a hero and a hero look like a villain. I wrote Ballu for him, but he made Ballu immortal.'
