The Nassar & Prashanth partnership

After 9 years apart, they came back together for Ponnar Shankar (2011). Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. They didn't share a set between 2002 and 2011.

From Chembaruthi (1992) to Saahasam (2016). It started with Chembaruthi (1992).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Jeans; the 2010s to Saahasam. Nassar acted in every film; Prashanth acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • For Jodi (1999), director Praveen Gandhi wanted a fresh pair. Prashanth was already a star after Jeans. Nassar was cast as his father. But during shoot, the director realized the father-son scenes had more crackle than the romance. So he expanded Nassar's role into a full supporting lead. That's how the pair accidentally became a duo.
  • In Virumbugiren (2002), Nassar played a strict father again. But this time, Prashanth pushed him to improvise. During the climax confrontation, Nassar was supposed to deliver a monologue. Prashanth whispered a line change mid-scene. Nassar took it, flipped it, and the take became the film's most replayed moment. They fed off each other's instincts.
  • After Jodi flopped, Prashanth called Nassar and said, 'We need to fix this.' They met at a coffee shop in Chennai and decided to do Virumbugiren together. Nassar later admitted that Prashanth was the one who kept the partnership alive — he refused to let one bad film end their on-screen bond.
  • Nassar once said in an interview: 'Prashanth is the only co-star who made me forget I was acting. When we faced each other, I wasn't a senior artist. I was just a father talking to his son.'
  • Their third film Saahasam (2016) was a remake of the Telugu hit 'Rakshasudu'. But here's the twist: the original Telugu film had no father-son angle. The Tamil version added a whole subplot for Nassar because the director specifically wanted to recreate the Jodi magic. So a whole character exists only because of their earlier pairing.
