The Sivaji Ganesan & Saroja Devi partnership

After 22 years apart, they came back together for Parambhariyam (1993). They didn't share a set between 1971 and 1993. 1962 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months.

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Irumbu Thirai (1960) to Once More (1997).

The shape of the work

The 1960s account for 73% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Palum Pazhamum; the 1990s to Once More. Sivaji Ganesan acted in every film; Saroja Devi acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Irumbu Thirai (1960), almost didn't happen. Director M. A. Thirumugam wanted a different heroine, but Sivaji Ganesan insisted on Saroja Devi after seeing her in a Kannada film. He told the producer: 'If she isn't in it, I'm out.'
  • Saroja Devi once said Sivaji would deliberately slow down his dialogue delivery in emotional scenes so she could catch up and match his rhythm. She called it 'his gift to new actors' — he never let her feel rushed on set.
  • Their 1964 hit Puthiya Paravai launched a trend: the 'modern woman' in Tamil cinema. Saroja Devi's character — a bold, independent nurse who challenges Sivaji's conservative hero — inspired a wave of similar roles for heroines in the late 60s.
  • Off-screen, they had a running joke: every time they finished a film together, Sivaji would hand Saroja Devi a small box of Mysore Pak sweets. She kept every empty box for years. 'He never forgot,' she recalled in a 2005 interview.
  • Saroja Devi on Sivaji Ganesan: 'He didn't just act with me — he taught me how to hold a pause. In Palum Pazhamum (1961), there's a scene where I had to cry without blinking. He stood off-camera and whispered the lines to me until I got it right.'
  • In Aalayamani (1962), Sivaji insisted on a single-take sequence where they argue in a courtroom. Saroja Devi kept flubbing her lines. He told the crew to keep rolling and started improvising — she followed his lead, and the final take is the one in the film.
