Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Thayilla Kuzhandhai (1976), was a remake of a Hindi hit. Vijayakumar was already a star, but Thengai Srinivasan was still finding his footing in comedy. The director paired them specifically to give the comedy track a dramatic anchor — and it worked so well that they became a go-to duo for the next decade.
• In Rudhra Thaandavam (1978), Vijayakumar played the intense hero while Thengai Srinivasan played the comic sidekick. But here's the trick: Thengai never mugged for laughs. He played his scenes straight, letting Vijayakumar's over-the-top anger set up the punchlines. Vijayakumar later said that Thengai's deadpan timing made him a better actor because he had to stay in character longer.
• Apoorva Sahodarigal (1983) — a film where they played brothers separated at birth — directly inspired a wave of twin-swap comedies in Tamil cinema through the 1980s. Directors started writing double roles specifically for Vijayakumar, and Thengai became the default choice for the comic twin's friend. Without this film, you probably don't get the later Kamal Haasan double-role comedies.
• On the sets of Sonnadhu Nee Dhanaa (1978), the two developed a ritual: before every scene together, they'd share a single cigarette, smoking it in turns. Thengai would take the first drag, Vijayakumar the last. They kept this up for every film they did together, even after both quit smoking in real life.
• Vijayakumar once told a magazine: 'Thengai Srinivasan was the only co-star who could make me laugh so hard that I'd forget my lines. We'd have to reshoot entire scenes because I'd break character. He never broke character once.'
