The Puri Jagannadh & Brahmanandam partnership
For 15 years, a Puri–Brahmanandam film arrived almost every year. From Badri (2000) to Loafer (2015). Pokiri is the one most viewers reach for.
It started with Badri (2000).
The shape of the work
The 2000s belonged to Pokiri; the 2010s to Heart Attack. Puri Jagannadh directed every film; Brahmanandam acted in all of them. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Puri Jagannadh cast Brahmanandam in '143' (2004) after seeing his timing in a small role in 'Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi' — but Brahmi almost said no because the role was too small. Puri convinced him by saying, 'You'll steal the film in 5 minutes.' He did.
- On the sets of 'Devudu Chesina Manushulu' (2012), Puri would give Brahmanandam only a one-line situation — no written dialogue. Brahmi would then improvise three different versions, and Puri would pick the wildest one. That's why every scene between them feels unscripted.
- During the shoot of 'Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu' (2012), Puri and Brahmanandam had a running bet: if Brahmi made the crew laugh during a take, Puri would buy him biryani. Brahmi reportedly ate biryani 18 days straight.
- The success of Brahmanandam's comedy track in '143' (2004) directly led Puri to write a full-length comic role for him in 'Pokiri' (2006) — which became the template for every Puri-Brahmi collaboration after that: the hero's loud, loyal, slightly unhinged sidekick.
- Brahmanandam once said in an interview: 'Puri garu is the only director who lets me be a fool on screen without making me feel like one off screen. He trusts my madness.'
- In 'Loafer' (2015), Puri deliberately shot Brahmanandam's scenes in single long takes — no cuts. He wanted Brahmi's physical comedy (the stutter, the exaggerated walks) to play out in real time. Brahmi later said it was the most exhausting 3-minute scene of his career.
