• Manivannan didn't want to cast Vaiyapuri in 'Kallazhagar' (1999). He thought Vaiyapuri's comic style was too loud for the role. Vaiyapuri begged for a screen test, did one scene, and Manivannan changed his mind on the spot.
• In 'Piriyadha Varam Vendum' (2001), Manivannan wrote a 12-minute single-take comedy sequence for Vaiyapuri. No cuts. Vaiyapuri had to time every pause to Manivannan's off-screen hand signals. That scene is still studied by Tamil comedy writers.
• Their 2002 film 'Pammal K. Sambandam' directly inspired the character of 'Kovai Sarala' in later comedies. Manivannan wrote the nagging-wife role specifically because Vaiyapuri's timing made the husband's frustration funnier. That archetype then became a template for 2000s Tamil family comedies.
• On every single one of their 9 films, Vaiyapuri would bring Manivannan a packet of hot vada from a specific shop in Kodambakkam before the first shot. Manivannan never acknowledged it. But if Vaiyapuri forgot once, Manivannan would stall the shoot by 30 minutes.
• Manivannan once told a magazine: 'Vaiyapuri is the only actor who can make me laugh while I'm directing him. I'll be yelling at the light boy, and he'll do one expression, and I forget why I was angry.'
