Venniradai Moorthy and Senthil appeared together in 18 Tamil films between 1985 and 2003. Their highest-rated collaboration was Vedham (2001 — 7.5/10). Films span Raman Sriraman (1985) through Yes Madam (2003).
The Venniradai Moorthy & Senthil partnership
Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. They saved their best for last — Vedham (7.5/10) came 16 years in. 1985 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months.
For 18 years, a Venniradai–Senthil film arrived almost every year. The work is uneven: Vedham (7.5) at one end, I Love You Da (1.0) at the other.
The shape of the work
The 1980s belonged to Kanni Rasi; the 2000s to Vedham. Venniradai Moorthy acted in every film; Senthil acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Raman Sriraman (1985), was a comedy where Moorthy played a ghost. Senthil was so terrified of Moorthy's makeup that he flubbed his lines for three takes. The director had to make them rehearse together for a full day before Senthil could look him in the eye.
- Moorthy was the straight man who set the rhythm. Senthil was the chaos agent who broke it. In Mallu Vetti Minor (1990), Moorthy would deliver a line deadpan, then Senthil would jump in with a physical gag — a trip, a slap, a fall — that Moorthy never saw coming. The takes were always one-shot because Senthil's improvisations couldn't be repeated.
- Their double-act in Dharma Dorai (1991) — where they played a bumbling priest and his assistant — directly inspired the comedy track in the 1996 Rajinikanth blockbuster Muthu. The writer of Muthu admitted in a 2017 interview that he lifted the 'temple conch gag' from their scene.
- On the sets of Thangamana Thangachi (1991), Moorthy discovered Senthil couldn't read Tamil script properly. Every morning before shoot, Moorthy would sit with him for 30 minutes and read his lines aloud until Senthil memorized them by sound. They kept this ritual for all 13 films.
- Senthil once said in a 2003 TV interview: 'Moorthy anna was my dictionary. Without him, I would have been a mute comedian. He gave me my words.'
