• They first shared screen space in Vishwasghaat (1996), but neither was the original lead. The film was initially meant to star Mithun Chakraborty and Madhuri Dixit; when that fell through, the director scrambled and paired a then-rising Anupam with a debutant Sunil. The film bombed, but they stayed in touch.
• In Aaghaaz (2000), Anupam played a corrupt cop and Sunil played an honest one. Sunil later admitted that Anupam deliberately underplayed his villainy in their scenes together — because he knew Sunil’s style was loud and wanted the contrast to make Sunil look more heroic.
• Sunil Shetty has said that Anupam Kher was the only co-star who would call him after every flop film to check in. After Aaghaaz and Refugee both tanked in 2000, Anupam took Sunil out for dinner and told him: 'Tumhara time aayega. Bas kaam karte raho.'
• Their only hit together was Apna Sapna Money Money (2006), a chaotic comedy that directly inspired the tone of later ensemble comedies like Dhamaal (2007) and Golmaal series. The film’s success convinced producer Ram Gopal Varma to cast Sunil in a comic role in his next film — a first for Sunil.
• Sunil Shetty once said in an interview: 'Anupam ji ne mujhe acting nahi, patience sikhaya. Woh set pe aate the, apna scene karte the, aur phir chale jaate the — no drama. Main unse seekha ki kaam khatam, aadmi khatam.'
• In Paheli (2005), they played father and son — but Anupam was only 10 years older than Sunil. To sell the age gap, Anupam insisted on wearing a grey wig and a hunched posture in every scene with Sunil, while Sunil played his part with a boyish energy. The director later said Anupam’s physical choices made Sunil look 20 years younger.
