• Anupam Kher and Asrani first shared screen space in 'Wafadaar' (1985), but the real spark came when director Mohan Kumar paired them again in 'Insaaf Ki Awaaz' (1986) — Kher later said Kumar deliberately cast them as contrasting characters to create a 'comic vs serious' tension that neither could do alone.
• In 'Satyamev Jayate' (1987), Asrani played the comic sidekick while Kher played the villain — but they swapped energy on set: Asrani would improvise one-liners during Kher's dramatic pauses, and Kher would feed him straight lines to set up the punch. The director let them run with it because the audience laughed harder at the contrast.
• During the shoot of 'Bees Saal Baad' (1988), Kher and Asrani shared a hotel room in Ooty for three weeks. Asrani later revealed in an interview that they spent nights rehearsing each other's lines — not their own — just to help the other get the timing right. No ego, just two actors trying to make the other look good.
• Their pairing in 'Satyamev Jayate' (1987) directly inspired director Rajkumar Kohli to cast them together in his next film — but Kohli wanted them as a comic duo, not hero-villain. That film never got made, but the idea of 'Kher + Asrani = comedy gold' later influenced casting in 'Aaghaaz' (2000), where they finally played friends instead of adversaries.
• After 'Bees Saal Baad' (1988), Kher and Asrani didn't work together for 12 years. They met again on the sets of 'Aaghaaz' (2000) and hugged for a full minute before shooting. Kher later said they picked up their rhythm in the first take itself — like no time had passed.
