• Charlie was a popular comedian in the 80s, but Manorama was already a legend. Their first film together, Enakkul Oruvan (1984), was a thriller where she played a ghost — and Charlie had to act terrified of her. He later admitted he was genuinely nervous sharing screen space with her.
• In Singaravelan (1992), Charlie played the hero's sidekick while Manorama played a comic mother figure. Their timing was so sharp that director R. V. Udayakumar let them improvise entire scenes. The bit where they argue over a stolen banana became a local meme before memes existed.
• Manorama called Charlie 'my son' on set. He was the only co-star she personally invited to her home for Pongal every year. After she passed in 2015, Charlie broke down at a public event and said, 'I lost my on-screen mother and my real one in the same decade.'
• Their film Piriyadha Varam Vendum (2001) was the last time Manorama played a full-length comic role before she shifted to character parts. Charlie later said that film's success convinced producers to keep casting older actresses in comedy — not just as grandmothers.
• Charlie once told a magazine: 'Manorama akka could make you laugh with just a raised eyebrow. I learned more from her in one scene than from any acting class. She'd whisper the next line in my ear if I forgot — and still make it look like part of the script.'
• In Endrum Anbudan (1992), they played a mother-son duo for the first time. Charlie deliberately slowed his comic delivery to match her rhythm — he said she had a 'village beat' to her dialogue, and he had to sync to it. The result was a natural, unhurried banter that critics called 'the heart of the film.'
