Nagesh and Vanisri appeared together in 17 Tamil films between 1965 and 1977. Their highest-rated collaboration was Punnagai (1971 — 7.6/10). Films span Ennadhan Mudivu (1965) through Ilaya Thalaimurai (1977).
The Nagesh & Vanisri partnership
1969 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 12 years, a Nagesh–Vanisri film arrived almost every year. Remarkably even — every film rates between 6.5 and 7.6.
From Ennadhan Mudivu (1965) to Ilaya Thalaimurai (1977). Velli Vizha (1972, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.
The shape of the work
The 1960s belonged to Ennadhan Mudivu; the 1970s to Punnagai. Nagesh acted in every film; Vanisri acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Ennadhan Mudivu (1965), almost didn't happen. Director M. A. Thirumugam wanted a different heroine, but Nagesh insisted on Vanisri after seeing her in a small role. He told the producer, 'If she's not in it, I'm out.'
- On the set of Vasantha Maligai (1972), Nagesh would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Vanisri laugh. She'd then improvise a comeback, and the director kept those takes because the laughter felt real. That film became their biggest hit together.
- Vanisri once revealed that Nagesh called her 'Kunjamma' off-screen — a pet name he used for no other co-star. She said he'd bring her filter coffee from his favorite shop in Kodambakkam every single day of shooting, even when they weren't filming together.
- Their 1972 film Velli Vizha directly inspired the 1978 Hindi hit 'Chakravyuha' — producer K. Balaji saw the rushes and told his Bombay team, 'This pair's rhythm is what we need.' The Hindi version cast different actors but kept the exact same plot structure.
- Vanisri once said in a 1985 interview: 'Nagesh didn't act with me. He acted for me. He'd adjust his timing so I'd look good. That's why I never felt nervous in any of our 16 films.'
- In Punnagai (1971), Nagesh insisted on a scene where Vanisri's character slaps him — unheard of for a male star then. He told the director, 'She needs to own this moment. I'll take the hit.' That scene became the film's most talked-about sequence.
