• They first teamed up in 1978's 'En Kelvikku Enna Bathil' because director S. P. Muthuraman needed a villain who could match Sivaji Ganesan's intensity. Nambiar was the first choice, but he insisted on bringing in Vijayakumar as the second lead — he'd seen him in a stage play and thought they'd bounce off each other well.
• In 'Raja Rishi' (1985), Nambiar played the ruthless king and Vijayakumar the loyal minister. The trick was that Nambiar would deliberately slow down his dialogue delivery in their scenes together — he knew Vijayakumar had a quicker, more reactive style. That pause forced Vijayakumar to hold his energy, creating a tension that made their confrontations crackle.
• On the sets of 'Avasara Police 100' (1990), the two had a running bet: whoever flubbed a line first had to buy the entire crew lunch. Nambiar, known for his iron memory, never lost once. Vijayakumar paid for six meals that shoot.
• Their pairing in 'Sethupathi IPS' (1994) directly inspired director R. K. Selvamani to cast them again in 'Raasaiyya' (1995) — he wanted the same 'old guard vs new blood' dynamic for a village feud story. That film became the last time they shared screen space.
• Vijayakumar once told a magazine: 'Nambiar sir would finish his shot and then stand behind the camera just to watch me. He never said a word. But if I did something he liked, he'd nod once. That nod meant more than any award.'
