The Shahrukh Khan & Satish Shah partnership

After 12 years apart, they came back together for Dunki (2023). They didn't share a set between 2011 and 2023. Their work runs across 4 decades of Hindi cinema.

From Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1993) to Dunki (2023). Their most recent film, Dunki, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 70% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa; the 2020s to Dunki. Shahrukh Khan acted in every film; Satish Shah acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Satish Shah was the one who convinced Shah Rukh to sign 'Main Hoon Na'. SRK was unsure about playing a college student at 38, but Satish — who played his father in the film — told him, 'You'll pull it off, just trust Farah.'
  • In 'Om Shanti Om', Satish Shah played the frustrated director who keeps yelling 'Action!' at SRK's junior artist character. The comedy came from Satish deliberately flubbing his lines to make SRK break character — and SRK, in turn, would overact on purpose to make Satish corpse. The outtakes are legendary on set.
  • Their only film together that didn't feature Satish as a father figure was 'Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani' — and it's the one that directly inspired the 'fake news' satire trend in Bollywood. Years later, writers of 'Pataal Lok' and 'The Trial' cited this film's tone as a reference for mixing comedy with media corruption.
  • Satish Shah is the only co-star Shah Rukh has ever called 'Baba' on set. It started during 'Main Hoon Na' when SRK was exhausted and Satish made him tea. SRK said, 'Baba, you're like my real father.' Satish replied, 'Then stop calling me sir.' They've used 'Baba' ever since.
  • Satish Shah on working with SRK: 'He has this habit of pulling you into his madness. In 'Bhoothnath', he insisted we rehearse the ghost-scene dialogue in complete darkness at 2 AM. I said, 'Yaar, I'm 60, my heart can't take this.' He just laughed and said, 'Baba, that's exactly the reaction I want.'
