The Sivaji Ganesan & K. Vijayan partnership
Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. For 18 years, a Sivaji–K. film arrived almost every year. From Kaval Daivam (1969) to Thambatyam (1987).
Thirisoolam (1979, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue. Kaval Daivam is the one most viewers reach for.
The shape of the work
The 1960s belonged to Kaval Daivam; the 1980s to Bandham. Sivaji Ganesan acted in every film; K. Vijayan directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Director K. Vijayan didn't initially plan to cast Sivaji Ganesan in their first film together, 'Kaval Daivam' (1969). He was a newcomer then, and Sivaji was already a legend. Vijayan walked into Sivaji's office with the script, expecting a rejection. Sivaji read it overnight and called him back at 6 AM the next day to say yes.
- On the sets of 'Thirisoolam' (1979), Sivaji Ganesan would often rewrite his own dialogues in the morning. K. Vijayan never stopped him. Instead, he'd quietly adjust the blocking and the other actors' lines to match Sivaji's new version. That film became a massive hit, and Vijayan later said Sivaji's improvisations made the scenes feel alive.
- Their 1977 film 'Annan Oru Koyil' directly launched the career of actor Vijayakanth. K. Vijayan cast him as the villain in that film, and Sivaji Ganesan personally recommended him to other directors after seeing his work. Vijayakanth later became a major star and even a politician.
- K. Vijayan was one of the few directors Sivaji Ganesan allowed to call him by his real name, 'Villupuram' (his hometown), instead of 'Nadigar Thilagam' (the title everyone used). They'd share a cup of filter coffee before every shot, and Vijayan would never say 'cut' until Sivaji nodded he was done.
- K. Vijayan once said about Sivaji Ganesan: 'He was not an actor who needed a director. He was a director who needed an actor. I just gave him the space to breathe.'
