The Puri Jagannadh & M. S. Narayana partnership

From Badri (2000) to Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu (2012). For 12 years, a Puri–M. film arrived almost every year. Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi is the one most viewers reach for.

It started with Badri (2000).

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 73% of everything they made together. The 2000s belonged to Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi; the 2010s to Golimaar. Puri Jagannadh directed every film; M. S. Narayana acted in all of them. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Puri Jagannadh cast M. S. Narayana in 'Itlu Sravani Subramanyam' (2001) after seeing him in a small stage play. Narayana was a theater regular with zero film experience at that point. Puri took a gamble on him for a comic role that ended up stealing the show.
  • On the sets of 'Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi' (2003), Puri would give Narayana just a one-line situation — not a full dialogue. Narayana would then improvise the entire scene in his own rhythm. Puri later said that Narayana's timing was so sharp he never needed a second take.
  • The success of Narayana's comic track in 'Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi' (2003) directly led to Puri writing a full-length comedy role for him in '143' (2004). That film made Narayana a household name for his 'Chammak Challo' dialogue — a phrase Telugu audiences still use casually.
  • Puri and Narayana had a standing ritual: before every film's first day shoot, they'd share a cup of tea at the same small stall near Annapurna Studios. They did this for all five films, without fail, from 2001 to 2012.
  • Puri Jagannadh once said in an interview: 'Narayana is the only actor I never had to direct. I just gave him the camera and he became the scene.' He said this while promoting 'Golimaar' (2010).
  • In 'Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu' (2012), Puri deliberately wrote a scene where Narayana's character had to react silently for two full minutes — no dialogue, just facial expressions. Puri wanted to prove that Narayana could hold a scene without a single word. The rushes made the entire crew laugh.
