Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Manaivi Oru Mandhiri (1988), was a low-budget family drama. Director G. R. Nathan paired them because both were known for quick comic timing — he needed a couple that could banter without rehearsals. They shot the entire film in 18 days.
• In Thangamana Purushan (1989), Sarala would deliberately flub her lines to make Moorthy break character. He'd then improvise a comeback that wasn't in the script. The director kept those takes because the audience laughed harder at the real reactions.
• Gopala Gopala (1996) was the first Tamil film where both actors played a married couple dealing with a supernatural plot — a ghost comedy. That film directly inspired the 2005 hit Chandramukhi's comic subplot between Vadivelu and Manobala.
• On the sets of Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venkatesa (1999), Moorthy and Sarala had a running bet: whoever forgot their lines first had to buy the other a box of Mysore Pak. Sarala lost twice. Moorthy never lost once.
