• Their first film together, Bhagyalakshmi (1961), almost didn't happen. Gemini Ganesan was initially hesitant to pair with Sowcar Janaki because she was a newcomer to Tamil cinema — she had only done a few Telugu films. It was director K. V. Srinivasan who convinced Gemini that her intensity would balance his laid-back style.
• On the set of Iru Kodugal (1969), Sowcar Janaki would deliberately slow down her dialogue delivery to match Gemini Ganesan's famously languid rhythm. She later said she learned to 'wait for his pause' — that hesitation became their signature, making every argument scene feel like a real couple fighting.
• After every single film wrap, Gemini Ganesan would personally drive Sowcar Janaki home — even if she lived in the opposite direction. This went on for 13 films, from 1961 to 1999. She once joked he was the only co-star who never forgot her address.
• Their 1971 film Rangarattinam directly inspired the 1998 hit Kondattam — their only reunion in the 90s. Director K. S. Ravikumar had grown up watching their old films and wrote Kondattam specifically to bring them back together, casting them as an aging couple. It worked: the film ran for 100 days.
• Sowcar Janaki once said in a 1999 interview: 'Gemini sir never rehearsed with anyone else. But with me, he would sit down and read the entire scene twice. He said my eyes made him nervous — in a good way.'
• In School Master (1973), Gemini Ganesan insisted on doing a 12-minute single-take emotional scene with Sowcar Janaki — no cuts, no retakes. He told the director that if he broke character, Janaki would pull him back with just a glance. They shot it in one go. It's the scene Tamil audiences still quote.
