The Rama Narayanan & S. S. Chandran partnership

1988 was their peak — 4 films in twelve months. For 13 years, a Rama–S. film arrived almost every year. The work is uneven: Sivappu Malli (6.8) at one end, Vai Pandhal (1.0) at the other.

From Sivappu Malli (1981) to Vaanga Partner Vaanga (1994). The played out closed with Vaanga Partner Vaanga in 1994.

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 92% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Sivappu Malli; the 1990s to Vaanga Partner Vaanga. Rama Narayanan directed every film; S. S. Chandran acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Rama Narayanan cast S. S. Chandran as the villain in Sivappu Malli (1981) after seeing him in a stage play. Chandran was so nervous on the first day that he flubbed every line — Narayanan made him rehearse the scene 14 times before rolling camera.
  • On the set of Soorakottai Singakutti (1983), Chandran would deliberately break into laughter mid-scene to throw Narayanan off. Narayanan retaliated by making Chandran do the same slapstick fall 22 times in one afternoon. They called it 'mutual torture therapy'.
  • Their 1984 disaster Vai Pandhal (rated 1/10) was so bad that a rival producer bought the rights just to burn the print in a public stunt. That producer later admitted the negative publicity made him launch a new actor — who became a star. The actor? Vijayakanth.
  • After every film wrap, Narayanan and Chandran would share a single cigarette — no matter who smoked or didn't. They did this for all 11 films. Chandran once said, 'If we didn't finish that cigarette, the film wouldn't release.'
