The Dharmendra & Kader Khan partnership

1987 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 17 years, a Dharmendra–Kader film arrived almost every year. From Samraat (1982) to Nyaydaata (1999).

The spanned closed with Nyaydaata in 1999. It started with Samraat (1982).

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 64% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Samraat; the 1990s to Nyaydaata. Dharmendra acted in every film; Kader Khan acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Dharmendra personally requested Kader Khan for Jaani Dost (1983) after seeing his comic timing in a stage play. Kader was initially hesitant because he was booked solid with writing assignments.
  • On the sets of Jaani Dost, Kader Khan would rewrite his own dialogues on the spot to match Dharmendra's natural Punjabi accent. Dharmendra then delivered those lines in one take, often making the crew laugh so hard they had to reset.
  • During the shoot of Aathank (1996), Dharmendra brought homemade gajar ka halwa for the entire unit every Friday. Kader Khan later said in an interview that he gained 5 kilos just from those Fridays.
  • Kader Khan once said about Dharmendra: 'He doesn't act. He just stands there and the camera falls in love with him. I had to work twice as hard to keep up.'
  • Nyaydaata (1999) was the last film where Kader Khan wrote dialogues for Dharmendra. After this, Kader shifted almost entirely to writing for Govinda, directly ending the Dharmendra-Kader comedy track that Jaani Dost had started.
  • In Aathank (1996), Dharmendra insisted on doing a slapstick scene where Kader Khan had to fall into a muddy pond. Kader did it in one take, then whispered to Dharmendra: 'You owe me a new kurta.' Dharmendra bought him five.
