The S. A. Chandrasekhar & S. S. Chandran partnership

From Vetri (1984) to Once More (1997). Vetri is the one most viewers reach for. The spanned closed with Once More in 1997.

It started with Vetri (1984).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Vetri; the 1990s to Vishnu. S. A. Chandrasekhar directed every film; S. S. Chandran acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • S. A. Chandrasekhar cast S. S. Chandran in 'Vetri' (1984) after seeing him in a small role in another film. Chandran was so nervous on the first day that he flubbed every line. Chandrasekhar didn't yell — he just rewrote the scene to match Chandran's natural stammer. That scene became the film's most remembered comic bit.
  • On the sets of 'Sigappu Malargal' (1986), Chandrasekhar would give Chandran only a one-line description of a scene — no script. Chandran had to improvise every reaction. Chandrasekhar later said this forced Chandran to stop 'acting' and just react like a real person. It worked so well they repeated the method for all their films together.
  • Their 1988 film 'Idhu Engal Needhi' was a disaster at the box office. But it directly led to Chandrasekhar casting his son Vijay in a lead role for the first time — because he needed a fresh face to recover his career. Vijay's debut 'Naalaiya Theerpu' (1992) was their next collaboration. Without that flop, Vijay might never have become a star.
  • Chandran was the only actor Chandrasekhar allowed to call him by his first name on set. Every other actor had to say 'Sir' or 'Director'. Chandran called him 'Chandru' even during takes. This drove the assistant directors crazy, but Chandrasekhar never corrected him.
  • S. S. Chandran once told a magazine: 'Chandrasekhar never told me I was funny. He just kept casting me. That's how I knew I was doing something right.'
  • In 'Sendhoorapandi' (1993), Chandrasekhar deliberately wrote a serious, emotional scene for Chandran — no comedy. Chandran begged for a joke. Chandrasekhar refused. After the first take, the entire crew was in tears. Chandran never asked for a joke again in their remaining films.
