Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Nam Naadu (1969), almost didn't happen. Director M. A. Thirumugam was hesitant to cast Pandari Bai as Thengai Srinivasan's mother because she was only 10 years older than him. She convinced him by saying age gaps don't matter if the performance lands.
• In Uzhaikkum Karangal (1976), Thengai Srinivasan deliberately slowed down his comic timing to match Pandari Bai's more measured delivery. He later told a magazine that she 'forced him to act with his eyes, not his mouth' — making their scenes together feel more real than funny.
• Their pairing in Idhayakkani (1975) directly launched the career of child actor Master Sekhar. The film's emotional scenes between the two of them got him noticed by K. Balachander, who cast him in the iconic Apoorva Raagangal the next year.
• On the sets of Pattikkaattu Raja (1975), Thengai Srinivasan would bring Pandari Bai a cup of filter coffee every morning before makeup. She returned the favour by packing his favourite murukku for evening shoots. They kept this ritual going through all nine films.
• Pandari Bai once said in a 1984 interview: 'Thengai made me laugh even when the director was yelling at us. He'd whisper a joke right before 'action' and I'd have to bite my cheek to keep a straight face. That's why our scenes together look so alive.'
• In Vellai Roja (1983), their last film together, Thengai Srinivasan improvised a line where he calls Pandari Bai's character 'amma' instead of the scripted 'akka'. The director kept it in because it changed the entire emotional weight of the scene — turning a comic moment into a tearjerker.
