The Thengai Srinivasan & Poornam Viswanathan partnership

For 14 years, a Thengai–Poornam film arrived almost every year. From Rickshawkaran (1971) to Padikkadavan (1985). Thillu Mullu (1981, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.

Rickshawkaran is the one most viewers reach for. The unfolded closed with Padikkadavan in 1985.

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Rickshawkaran; the 1980s to Thillu Mullu. Thengai Srinivasan acted in every film; Poornam Viswanathan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first met on the set of Idhaya Veenai (1972) because the director, M. A. Thirumugam, needed a comedian who could also play a serious father figure. Srinivasan was a stage actor with zero film experience; Viswanathan was already a known face. Srinivasan later said Viswanathan helped him through his first shot without making him feel like a rookie.
  • In Naan Avanillai (1974), Viswanathan played the straight-laced husband while Srinivasan played the comic sidekick. But here's the trick: Srinivasan would deliberately flub his lines in rehearsal to make Viswanathan laugh, forcing him to stay in character under pressure. Viswanathan later admitted that those moments made his own performance sharper.
  • Their pairing in Moondru Mugam (1982) directly launched the career of actor Rajinikanth's then-new sidekick role. The film's success made producers realize that a strong comic duo could anchor a multi-star film. Without their chemistry in that movie, the template for 80s Tamil masala films might have looked very different.
  • Off-screen, they were neighbors in Chennai for over a decade. Every Sunday morning, Viswanathan would walk over to Srinivasan's house with a flask of filter coffee, and they'd discuss the week's shoot. This ritual lasted until Viswanathan moved houses in 1986.
  • Viswanathan once told a magazine: 'Thengai made me look like a better actor than I was. He'd throw me a line in a way that forced me to react genuinely. I never had to act with him — I just had to listen.'
  • In Kai Kodukkum Kai (1984), they played brothers for the first and only time. The director, K. Vijayan, said he cast them specifically because their real-life age gap (Viswanathan was 12 years older) and their off-screen ease made the sibling dynamic feel unforced. They improvised the entire 'argument over a missing watch' scene in one take.
