The 1990s account for 80% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Rajali; the 2010s to Pulan Visaranai 2. Roja Selvamani acted in every film; R. K. Selvamani directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Roja was a reigning star when she agreed to do Chembaruthi (1992) — but only because Selvamani promised her a role with actual meat, not just a glamour prop. She later said she took a pay cut to work with him.
• Selvamani deliberately wrote Roja's characters as morally grey — in Athiradi Padai (1994) she played a woman who betrays the hero. He said he trusted her to make the audience hate her, then still root for her by the end.
• They got married during the making of Raja Muthirai (1995). Roja was already acting in the film when they decided to tie the knot — Selvamani reportedly finished the day's shoot early so they could register the marriage.
• Their 1997 film Arasiyal was one of the first Tamil films to openly critique caste-based politics. It bombed at the box office but later became a reference point for political filmmakers like Pa. Ranjith.
• Roja once said in an interview: 'Selvamani doesn't direct me. He just sets the camera and lets me find the character. That's why I never needed a rehearsal with him.'
• On the set of Kuttrapathirikai (2007), Selvamani let Roja improvise her entire courtroom monologue in one take. He kept the first take in the final cut — something he never did with any other actor.
