• Muthuraman first cast Manorama in 'Mogam Muppadhu Varusham' (1976) after seeing her comic timing in a stage play. He later said he knew within five minutes of that play that she was the only one who could handle the rapid-fire dialogue he had in mind.
• On set, Muthuraman would give Manorama just the skeleton of a scene — a situation and a punchline — and let her improvise the entire buildup. She once told an interviewer that he never once rejected her ad-libs, even when they ran twice the allotted shot length.
• Their 1984 film 'Enakkul Oruvan' — rated 8.5/10 by fans — directly inspired the 2016 Tamil black comedy 'Joker'. The director of 'Joker' admitted in a press meet that he rewatched 'Enakkul Oruvan' five times to study how Muthuraman and Manorama balanced dark themes with laugh-out-loud moments.
• Muthuraman and Manorama had a standing ritual: before every first day of shoot, she would bring him a box of homemade murukku from her kitchen. He never ate it on set — he said he saved it for the last day of shooting, to celebrate wrapping.
• Manorama once said about Muthuraman: 'He never treated me like a comedian. He gave me scenes that had real emotion, and then trusted me to find the laugh inside the pain. No other director did that.'
• In 'Nalla Thambi' (1985) — their worst-rated film at 1/10 — Muthuraman reportedly rewrote Manorama's entire track overnight after she told him the original script felt 'like a cartoon'. He later admitted that her honesty saved the film from being a complete disaster, though it still tanked.
