Partnership facts

• Vaiyapuri and Pandu first shared screen space in 'Pennin Manathai Thottu' (2000) because the director needed two comedians who could play off each other without stepping on each other's lines. They had never worked together before, but the director saw them at a stage play and locked them in the same room for a week to build rhythm.
• In 'Pammal K. Sambandam' (2002), Vaiyapuri would deliberately flub his lines during rehearsals to make Pandu laugh, and Pandu would then improvise a comeback. The director kept the camera rolling and used those real reactions in the final cut — that's why their banter feels so natural.
• Their double-act in 'Jai' (2004) was so popular that the film's producer greenlit a separate comedy track for them in 'Villu' (2009) — a rare move for a Vijay-starrer. That track became the only part of the film that audiences actually cheered for in theatres.
• During the shoot of 'Kicha Vayasu 16' (2005), Vaiyapuri and Pandu made a pact: whoever finished their dialogue first would buy the other a cup of filter coffee. By the end of the schedule, Pandu owed Vaiyapuri 14 coffees — and paid up every single one.
• Pandu once said in a 2016 interview: 'Vaiyapuri is the only actor who can make me forget my lines because I'm laughing so hard. We never rehearsed after the first film — we just trusted each other to catch whatever the other threw.'
• In 'Narathan' (2016), their last film together, Vaiyapuri insisted on doing a scene in one continuous take because he said Pandu's timing was like a metronome — if they broke it, they'd lose the energy. They nailed it on the first try, and the director didn't even bother shooting a backup.
