Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in Vijeta (1982), but neither was the lead. Amrish played a military officer, Om played a journalist. The film's director, Govind Nihalani, deliberately cast them in small roles to test their intensity before giving them bigger parts in his next film.
• In Ardh Satya (1983), Om Puri's character is a tormented cop, and Amrish Puri plays his corrupt boss. The tension between them isn't loud — it's in the silences. Om later said Amrish would deliberately underplay his lines in their scenes together, forcing Om to lean in and react more subtly, which made their confrontations feel real.
• Despite sharing a surname, they weren't related. But on the sets of Party (1984), they started calling each other 'bhai' and kept it up for life. Om once joked that Amrish was the only co-star who could scold him for drinking too much and get away with it.
• Om Puri said about Amrish: 'He was the only actor who could make me nervous before a scene. Not because he was intimidating — because he was so prepared that I had to raise my own game.'
• Their pairing in Ghatak (1996) — where Amrish played the villain and Om played a comic sidekick — directly inspired the casting of the 2000 film Shool. The director, E. Nivas, said he wanted the same 'hero-villain tension with a comic relief friend' dynamic, and cast Manoj Bajpayee and Sayaji Shinde in those roles.
• In Chachi 420 (1997), they played brothers-in-law. Amrish was the stern patriarch, Om was the goofy one. The comedy worked because Amrish refused to crack a smile no matter how hard Om tried to make him laugh on set. Kamal Haasan, the director, said he kept the camera rolling because Amrish's straight face made Om's antics funnier.
