Long-Term Partnership

The Ram Gopal Varma & Rajpal Yadav partnership

After 12 years apart, they came back together for Dangerous (2022). They didn't share a set between 2010 and 2022. Their work runs across 4 decades of Hindi cinema.

From Shool (1999) to Ladki: Dragon Girl (2022). It started with Shool (1999).

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 69% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Shool; the 2020s to Ladki: Dragon Girl. Ram Gopal Varma director in some, producer in others. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Rajpal Yadav wasn't RGV's first choice for the comic role in 'Darna Zaroori Hai' (2006). The director had auditioned several actors but Rajpal walked in, did the scene in one take, and RGV told the casting team, 'Lock him. He's the only one who gets the rhythm of fear and funny together.'
  • On the set of 'Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag' (2007), RGV deliberately kept Rajpal Yadav in the dark about the film's tone. He told Rajpal to play his scenes as a straight-faced, tragic character — no wink, no comic timing. Rajpal later said that direction confused him so much he stopped acting and just reacted. That raw confusion is what RGV kept in the final cut.
  • After 'Rann' (2010) flopped at the box office, RGV went through a rough patch and stopped calling actors. Rajpal Yadav was the only one from that film who showed up at his office unannounced with a bottle of Old Monk. They sat in silence for two hours. RGV later told a mutual friend, 'He didn't come to ask for work. He came to make sure I was still breathing.'
  • Rajpal Yadav on working with RGV: 'He doesn't give you a character. He gives you a situation and says, 'Be alive in it.' With him, I never felt like an actor. I felt like a witness.' — Rajpal Yadav in a 2018 interview with Film Companion.
  • The only reason 'Dangerous' (2022) got made was because Rajpal Yadav called RGV during the pandemic and said, 'Let's make something so bad it becomes a cult classic.' RGV wrote the script in three days, and Rajpal produced the film himself on a shoestring budget. It directly inspired RGV's later decision to launch a series of low-budget digital horror films under his own banner.
