Partnership facts

• David Dhawan cast Shakti Kapoor in Raja Babu (1994) because he needed a villain who could also make you laugh. Shakti was already famous for both, but David specifically told him: 'Don't play it straight. Make Nandu a joke first, a threat second.' That choice defined their entire partnership.
• On the sets of Loafer (1996), Shakti Kapoor would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make David Dhawan laugh. David would then rewrite the scene on the spot, turning Shakti's goofs into actual dialogue. That's why Shakti's character in Loafer has those weird, rambling monologues — they were born from a prank.
• The success of Raja Babu (1994) directly led to David Dhawan casting Shakti Kapoor in a string of Govinda comedies. Without that first hit together, we might never have gotten Shakti's iconic 'Nandu' character — the template for every bumbling villain in 90s Bollywood comedies.
• Shakti Kapoor and David Dhawan never hung out outside work. Shakti once said in an interview: 'David sir would call me, give me the scene, and hang up. No chai, no dinner. But on set, he'd let me do whatever I wanted. That was our bond — total trust, zero friendship.'
