The Senthil & Charle partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. 1987 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 17 years, a SenthilCharle film arrived almost every year.

The work is uneven: Endrum Anbudan (6.6) at one end, Ninaithen Vandhai (1.0) at the other. From Thazhuvatha Kaigal (1986) to Punnagai Poove (2003).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Ore Oru Gramathiley; the 2000s to Punnagai Poove. Senthil acted in every film; Charle acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Senthil and Charle first met on the set of Thazhuvatha Kaigal (1986). Director Manivannan paired them as a comedy duo after seeing their individual timing in small roles. Neither had worked as a team before that film.
  • In Ore Oru Gramathiley (1987), Senthil played the straight man while Charle did the physical comedy. Charle once said in an interview that Senthil would deliberately pause his lines to let Charle's reactions land first — a rhythm they never rehearsed, just felt.
  • During the shoot of Anand (1987), Senthil and Charle shared a room in a cheap lodge in Kodaikanal for three weeks. They would stay up rewriting their own dialogues because the script had almost no comedy scenes — they added them on the spot.
  • Their double-act in Senthoora Poove (1988) was so popular that the film's producer, K. Balaji, greenlit a separate comedy track for them in his next three productions. That track became a template for 90s Tamil comedy duos like Goundamani-Senthil.
  • Charle told a Tamil magazine in 1999: 'Senthil and I never planned our comedy. We just looked at each other and knew what the other would do. That's why Hello (1999) felt like old times — we didn't even need a rehearsal.'
  • In Endrum Anbudan (1992), Senthil and Charle swapped their usual roles — Senthil did the slapstick and Charle played the annoyed straight man. The director said they argued for an hour before agreeing to try it. The scene where Charle throws a bucket at Senthil became a local meme in Tamil Nadu.
