Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in 'Insaaf Ki Awaaz' (1986), but neither was the lead. The film was a courtroom drama where both played lawyers — Kher was the defense, Grover the prosecution. They barely had a scene together, but director Shibu Mitra liked their contrast and cast them as brothers in 'Satyamev Jayate' the next year.
• In 'Ram Lakhan' (1989), Subhash Ghai deliberately pitted them as polar opposites: Kher's soft, comic constable vs Grover's loud, menacing villain. Grover once said in an interview that Kher would deliberately flub his lines to make him laugh during takes, and Ghai kept those bloopers in the final cut because they made the tension feel real.
• Despite playing enemies in most films, they were close friends off-screen. Grover was one of the first people Kher called after his 2012 cancer diagnosis. Kher later said Grover drove him to the hospital at 3 AM and sat through the entire biopsy without leaving.
• Their pairing in 'Nigahen: Nagina Part II' (1989) was so popular that the producers greenlit a spin-off comedy 'Mera Pati Sirf Mera Hai' (1990) specifically built around their bickering characters. That film flopped, but it was the only time they played a married couple's friends — not rivals.
• Gulshan Grover on their 12-film run: 'Anupam and I never had a single fight on set. We fought only on screen. Off it, we were like two kids who found a partner to play with. The camera would roll, and we'd just go at each other. Cut. Then chai.'
• Their last film together, 'Chatur Singh Two Star' (2011), was also the only one where they played a father-son duo. Kher was the corrupt police officer, Grover his hapless son. The film was a disaster, but Grover later joked that it took them 25 years to finally play family — and they still ended up fighting.
