The Nizhalgal Ravi & Raghuvaran partnership
Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Poovizhi Vasalile (1987) to Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000). The unfolded closed with Kandukondain Kandukondain in 2000.
It started with Poovizhi Vasalile (1987).
The shape of the work
The 1990s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Poovizhi Vasalile; the 2000s to Kandukondain Kandukondain. Nizhalgal Ravi acted in every film; Raghuvaran acted in all of them.
Partnership facts
- For Chaitanya (1990), director Mahendran cast Raghuvaran first, then asked Nizhalgal Ravi to audition. Ravi was so nervous he flubbed his lines. Raghuvaran stepped in, told Mahendran, 'He's the one. I'll rehearse with him till he gets it.' They shot the first scene together the next day.
- In Veera Padhakkam (1994), Raghuvaran played a hot-headed cop and Ravi played his calm, weary brother. Raghuvaran would deliberately speed up his dialogue delivery to throw Ravi off. Ravi would slow down even more, forcing Raghuvaran to match his rhythm. The director kept the takes where they fought for control of the scene.
- During Kolangal (1995), Raghuvaran was going through a rough divorce. Nizhalgal Ravi would pick him up every morning at 5 AM, drive him to the set, and sit with him between shots — not talking, just being there. They never discussed it publicly. Ravi only mentioned it once, years later, in a small magazine interview.
- Raghuvaran once told a film magazine: 'Ravi is the only actor who can make me look like I'm acting. He's so natural, I have to work twice as hard just to keep up.' He said this on the sets of Veera Padhakkam, while lighting a cigarette between shots.
- The success of their brotherly dynamic in Kolangal (1995) directly inspired director K. S. Ravikumar to cast them as brothers again in his next project — but the film never got made. Ravikumar later said he wrote a whole script around their pairing, but Raghuvaran's health declined and the project died.
