The Nizhalgal Ravi & Visu partnership

After 10 years apart, they came back together for Cheena Thaana 001 (2007). They didn't share a set between 1997 and 2007. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi (1987) to Cheena Thaana 001 (2007). It started with Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi (1987).

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi; the 2000s to Cheena Thaana 001. Visu director in some, actor in others. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Visu didn't just cast Nizhalgal Ravi in 'Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi' (1987) — he rewrote the entire second half after Ravi suggested a darker ending. The original script had a happy resolution; Ravi pushed for the wife to actually die. Visu agreed, and the film became a cult tragedy.
  • On the set of 'Neenga Nalla Irukkanum' (1992), Visu would deliberately flub his lines during rehearsals to make Ravi laugh. He said it was the only way to get Ravi to loosen up before a dramatic scene. Ravi later admitted those unscripted laughs made it into the final cut.
  • Their 1996 film 'Meendum Savithri' directly inspired the 2005 blockbuster 'Chandramukhi' — both are about a woman possessed by a vengeful spirit. Director P. Vasu has openly said he watched 'Meendum Savithri' multiple times while writing the script for Rajinikanth's film.
  • Visu and Ravi had a standing bet on every film: whoever flubbed the most takes had to buy the other a full meal at the canteen. Ravi lost every single time on 'Sishya' (1997) — Visu counted 17 flubs in one day. Ravi still paid up, laughing.
  • In 'Cheena Thaana 001' (2007), their last film together, Visu insisted Ravi play the villain — a complete role reversal from their earlier films where Ravi was always the hero. Ravi initially refused, saying he couldn't be mean to Visu on screen. Visu shot back: 'Then act like you hate me. It's called acting.'
