The Nassar & Roja Selvamani partnership

2000 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Chembaruthi (1992) to Saguni (2012).

The work is uneven: Mugam (7.5) at one end, Maayan (1.0) at the other. Mugam is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Mugam; the 2010s to Golimaar. Nassar acted in every film; Roja Selvamani acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • During the shoot of 'Eazhaiyin Sirippil' (2000), Nassar and Roja would rehearse their scenes in the car on the way to the set. They never used the written script — they improvised the entire dialogue together before reaching location.
  • Nassar personally recommended Roja Selvamani for the lead in 'Rakshana' (1993) after seeing her in a stage play. He told the director she had the intensity the role needed — and that single call launched their on-screen partnership.
  • In 'Mugam' (1999), Nassar deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery to match Roja's natural rhythm. He later said he realized she acted best when she wasn't rushed — so he let her set the pace in every scene they shared.
  • The success of 'Mugam' (1999) directly led to director R. K. Selvamani casting Roja in three more films back-to-back. Nassar had pushed for her in that role despite producers wanting a bigger name — and it changed her career trajectory overnight.
  • Roja Selvamani once said in an interview: 'Nassar sir never treated me like a co-star. He treated me like a student he was proud of. Every scene with him was a masterclass.'
  • After 'Maayan' (2001) bombed hard, Nassar called Roja and told her: 'This one is on me. I picked the wrong script. Let's never do a film just for money again.' They never worked together after that call.
